Staff Reporter, Sylhet/
In Sylhet education board, the number of female students is almost one and a half times more than the number of students in SSC and equivalent exams. 1 lakh 10 thousand 402 people have filled the form in four districts under the board to participate in the examination which will start from Sunday. The number of boys among them is 45 thousand 598. And the number of girls is about 20 thousand more than that; 64 thousand 804 people. That is, against every 100 students, there are 144 female students.
In the ratio of population in Bangladesh, the number of boys and girls is almost close. There is no precise explanation of how there is such a difference in Sylhet.
In Sylhet division, the interest towards studies is already low compared to other divisions in the country. According to the ‘Monitoring the Situation of Vital Statistics of Bangladesh 2021’ report of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, Sylhet is the most backward in the country in terms of education. But there is evidence that girls are gradually becoming interested.
Last year, 66 thousand 304 girls passed the SSC and equivalent exams in this board against 49 thousand 87 boys. Taking these statistics into consideration, it is seen that girls have progressed further this time.
When asked about this, Sylhet Education Board Controller of Examinations Arun Chandra Pal said, “Girls are aware of studies. This is why they are moving forward. Again boys from Sylhet region have a tendency to go abroad. Because of this, they become inattentive to studies.”
In this year’s SSC examination, the number of candidates in the board has decreased by 6 thousand. Among them, the number of students has decreased more.
Last year 1 lakh 16 thousand 490 students filled the SSC exam form. Among them 1 lakh 15 thousand 391 participated in the examination. This time students of 931 educational institutions will participate in the examination in 149 centers of the department. Examination will be held in 59 centers in Sylhet, 31 in Habiganj, 26 in Moulvibazar and 33 in Sunamganj among the four districts of the division.
Number of candidates in any district: In all the four districts under the board, girls are ahead of boys. Among them, the total number of candidates in Sylhet district is 41 thousand 429. Their 17 thousand 287 students; And the number of female students is 24 thousand 142. Out of 20 thousand 542 candidates in Habiganj, 8 thousand 381 are boys and 12 thousand 161 are girls.
Out of 24 thousand 745 candidates in Moulvibazar, 9 thousand 841 are boys and 14 thousand 904 are girls. Among the 23 thousand 686 candidates of Sunamganj, 10 thousand 89 students, 13 thousand 597 students.
Candidates are more Humanities: Seven out of 10 candidates of the board are Humanities. Their total number is 80 thousand 15 people. Among them, 31 thousand 698 students, 48 thousand 317 female students. 23 thousand 240 people will take part in the exam in science department. 10 thousand 212 boys among them; 13 thousand 28 girls. Only in business education department boys are slightly ahead. Among the 7 thousand 147 candidates in this category, there are 3 thousand 688 boys and 3 thousand 459 girls.
Why is the number of examinees low: Where the number of examinees increases every year, why is the reverse run in Sylhet? Kabir Ahmad said, “Due to the corona virus infection, the SSC exam in 2020 and 2021 could not be held on schedule. When the situation is somewhat normal, the syllabus has been reduced and these exams have been conducted.
“Most of the irregular and failed examinees passed because of the short syllabus. As a result, the number of failed candidates of the previous year is less this time. So the total number has come down a bit.”
What are the instructions: The board secretary said that the preparation for the examination has been completed, “All the equipment related to the examination has reached the center. Vigilance Team and Special Vigilance Team have been constituted. Besides, the control room has been opened.” This year, the examination will be held for three hours in all subjects, he said, and the candidates should reach the center half an hour before the examination. Mobiles or any such devices shall not be used. Central secretary can carry feature phone. Strict action will be taken if anyone else uses the mobile.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Mass) Sudeep Das said, they are also fully prepared, there will be police in every center.
In a public notice sent to the media, the Metropolitan Police said that gatherings, processions, beating of drums, use of loud speakers, carrying of weapons, explosives, bricks, stones, etc. will be prohibited within 200 yards of the examination center.
