This 73-year-old politician was elected as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on February 13, 2023. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal after verifying the nomination papers on February 13. President declared Sahabuddin. Later EC issued notification in this regard. Sahabuddin was born in Pabna in 1949. He has served as a District and Sessions Judge and a Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission. In 1971, he was the convener of Swadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangram Parishad in Pabna district and he also participated in the Great Liberation War. Joined Judiciary as BCS Cadre in 1982 and elected General Secretary of Judicial Service Association in 1995.

During his student life, he served as the President of Pabna District Chhatra League and in 1974 served as the President of Pabna District Jubo League. He was imprisoned after the brutal assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975. Soon after the BNP-Jamaat alliance came to power in 2001, Awami League and its affiliates attacked activists and minority communities. Incidents of murder, rape and looting also took place at that time.

Later, when the Awami League government came to power, it formed a ‘commission’ to investigate those incidents, headed by Sahabuddin. He served as Election Commissioner in the last National Council of Awami League. In personal life, he is the father of a son and his wife is Professor Dr. Rebecca Sultana is a former Joint Secretary to Govt.
