The general public has come out to demand uninterrupted electricity in Habiganj city. Customers have become extremely fed up as there is no electricity for one hour in a row every hour. Customers complain that electricity is supposed to be taken every 2 hours for one hour, but at present loadshedding of electricity is happening every hour. In view of this, Habiganj’s youth and conscious citizens organized a protest rally and protest march at the city’s RD Hall yesterday afternoon.

In the protest meeting held under the chairmanship of Biplab Kumar Roy Sujan and the general secretary of Habiganj district NAP, SM Farhad Ahmed Chowdhury, the human chain turned into a protest march after the participation of people from all walks of life including political, social and cultural organizations. The procession held a half-hour sit-in on the street in front of the city’s town hall during the city tour.

Meanwhile, Habiganj Sadar police station officer-in-charge Golam Mortuza met the leaders and expressed solidarity with the ongoing movement. The OC said that the Deputy Commissioner Ishrat Jahan has called for a discussion with the leaders about the demands including the ban on loadshedding. Later, the procession gathered at Nimtala premises after the round of the city.

Habiganj Deputy Commissioner Ishrat Jahan calmed down the agitated public by standing in solidarity with the protestors. The Deputy Commissioner told the general public that we have spoken to the officials of the Electricity Department about the matter. Hopefully, the situation will improve within the next two days.

Abdullah Al Mamun Sardar, Executive Engineer of Habiganj PDB, said that this is happening due to low power supply from the national grid. He said, we need 16 to 17 MW electricity under Habiganj PDB. But we are getting only 10 to 11 MW. Due to which we are forced to provide load shedding. But the situation will improve soon.

Farhad Chowdhury, who led the protest under the banner of young youth and conscious civil society, said that we common consumers are fed up with electricity. The electricity is going out hour by hour. Children are not able to bear this heat with broken electrical appliances in the house, such load shedding has caused us unbearable suffering.
