Law Minister Anisul Haque said that if there is a need to amend the Digital Security Act, it will be considered.
He said this in response to questions from journalists at the end of a seminar organized by the Dhaka Chamber at Motijheel in the capital on Sunday.
Admitting that there has been some misuse of the Digital Security Act, the minister said, ‘I have discussed with the United Nations Human Rights Commission firstly what can be changed in this law and this discussion is ongoing. From there came a technical note. It is being monitored. Besides, a procedure has been adopted so that journalists are not harassed unnecessarily. Moreover, on March 14, there was a discussion about this law with the Sudhi society. There they gave some recommendations. I also had something to say. That is why it was supposed to sit for discussion again on March 30. But it didn’t happen. But it will be in a couple of weeks.’
The Minister said at this time that if the misuse of the digital law can be resolved by any rule or if the law needs to be amended, it will be considered.
Anisul Haque said there is a need for a digital security law. Many countries around the world have such laws. It may be under some name other than the Digital Security Act. Such laws are needed to curb cyber crime.
When asked about the disqualification of the court in the anticipatory bail hearing of the editor of Prothom Alo, he said, ‘I will not comment on the judiciary. But there are precedents in the past – seven courts were embarrassed in the Bangabandhu murder case.
The United Nations Human Rights Commission and the US State Department are expressing concern about the case against Prothom Alo journalist Shamsuzzaman Sams and his removal. When asked about the position of the government in this regard, the minister said that the government has not filed a case against the media or against the journalists. The government has filed a case against the injustice. He raised the question whether the dignity of the country can be degraded by giving 10 rupees in the hands of a child.
