Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the case against Prothom Alo editor was undoubtedly done at the behest of the government. As a result of killing journalists, torture and persecution across the country, fear prevails among the people of the country including the media.

He said this in a statement on Thursday (March 30).

Mirza Fakhrul said that taking a journalist from his home late at night is a manifestation of the fascist behavior of the government. This kind of oppressive behavior is proof again that there is no freedom of media in the country.

BNP Secretary General said that the journalist was picked up in the dark of night in the style of arresting a top terrorist and defeated the barbaric invading forces of 1971. Almost 24 hours have passed since journalist Shamsuzzaman was picked up, but nothing has been reported about his whereabouts till now. The statement of the government ministers including Obaidul Quader in the incident of his removal has clearly proved that the government wants to suppress the people’s protest with the force of guns.

Mirza Fakhrul said that one cannot talk about price increase, one cannot talk about scarcity, one cannot talk about corruption and misrule, one cannot talk about vote robbery, one cannot protest against injustice. The government is using the Digital Security Act as a tool of torture to establish a reign of fear in the country. I demand the immediate release of journalist Shamsuzzaman and the repeal of the Digital Security Act.
