Misuse of digital security laws reduced: Law Minister

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque has expressed a strong commitment to work together with the United Nations to protect and promote human rights in Bangladesh. He made this promise in a courtesy meeting with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk in Geneva on Tuesday. In the meeting, the Law Minister directed the High Commissioner to work closely with his office on the Digital Security Act. The Law Minister informed the High Commissioner that the misuse of Digital Security Act has reduced a lot due to the effective initiatives of the government.
He said that the government is vigilant about stopping the misuse of this law. The government is discussing the good practice of the law in different countries of the world. The government is also consulting civil society representatives on the law.
The minister said that the government is working on the Information Protection Act to ensure data protection. A draft of the proposed law has been published recently, saying that the government is consulting various stakeholders on the law.
In the meeting, the High Commissioner highlighted the various activities of his office on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and requested Bangladesh’s full cooperation in this regard.
In the meeting, the Law Minister called for a stronger and more effective role of the United Nations in making efforts to repatriate the Rohingyas a success. Permanent representative and ambassador of Bangladesh appointed to the United Nations in Geneva. Sufiur Rahman was present at this time.
