The 11th National Assembly election held in 2018 was not transparent. Along with that, the people of Bangladesh have no faith in the judicial system. This is what is said in the recently published US State Department Human Rights Report 2022.

The report, titled 2022 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, was published on the website of the US State Department on Monday (March 20). The report is based on human rights situation in 198 countries and territories.

It is said that Sheikh Hasina and her party Awami League came to power for the third consecutive term of five years in the December 2018 parliamentary elections. He remains as Prime Minister. However, observers reported that the election was not free and fair due to various reasons, including stuffing of ballot boxes and intimidation of opposition polling agents and voters.

The published report mentions that there are political prisoners in Bangladesh and it is said that the government is using the law and its agencies in cases against the opposition parties. International and domestic experts also commented that there was not enough evidence in this case for punishment.

In its description of the human rights situation in Bangladesh last year, extrajudicial killings, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of citizens, punishment, torture or prosecution, life-threatening conditions in prisons, arbitrary arrests or detentions, political prisoners, obstruction of the independence of the judiciary and staying in other countries Political retaliatory measures against individuals have also been mentioned.

It is also mentioned in the report that even though the constitution of Bangladesh mentions a transparent and independent judicial system, it cannot function independently due to corruption and bias.

In addition, restrictions on the freedom of movement of refugees, ill-treatment of refugees, severe and unreasonable restrictions on political parties, government corruption; Harassment of or restrictions on domestic human rights organizations, lack of investigation and accountability for gender-based violence, including domestic abuse, sexual violence, child abuse, child and forced marriage, significant restrictions on freedom of trade unions and labor organizations, and other harmful practices, including child labor, have emerged. In this regard, the US Embassy in Dhaka said in a statement on Monday that the local human rights and labor rights of 198 countries and regions of the world have been highlighted in the light of the United Nations human rights treaties. The United States has been publishing this report for the past five decades. The country and region reports do not make any legal decisions, nor do they rank or compare the countries included in the report based on their human rights situation.
