Smuggling coal seized from Barachara depot, 1 arrested

The police arrested a professional smuggler named Noor Ahmad along with the consignment of Indian smuggled coal which was stored in the depot of Barachara land customs station in Tahirpur of Sunamganj.
After filing a case on Thursday afternoon, he was sent to the district jail through the court.
The arrested Noor Ahmad is the son of deceased Shukkur Ali of Barachara border village of North Sreepur Union of Upazila. Another 4-5 smugglers have been made anonymous accused in that case.
Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, 28 Border Guard Battalion Bangladesh (BGB) arrested Noor Ahmad, a member of the smuggling gang, along with Indian smuggled coal consignments, during a special operation on the road adjacent to the depot of Barachra Land Customs Station of Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj while moving the smuggled coal to another place.
On Thursday afternoon, Sunamganj Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ehsan Shah confirmed the information in the media cell of the district police.
According to the media cell, recently, various fallen depots of Borachhara fixed customs station of Tahirpur district and its surrounding houses, houses of several border villages are being stockpiled after bringing coal consignments from India through smuggling. After that, the members of the smuggling gang have been selling these stolen coal to different parts of the country on the road route of Barachara land customs station and the waterway of Patlai river.
On the basis of such secret information, a special operation was conducted in a depot of Barachara ground station under the leadership of police station SI Mridril Kanti Sarkar on Wednesday. In that operation, while removing the consignment of smuggled coal from the depot, the police seized one and a half metric tons (60 sacks) of smuggled Indian coal. After that, the police arrested Nur Ahmad, who was involved in that coal smuggling. At that time, 4 to 5 unidentified accomplices who were with Noor Ahmad managed to escape.
Syed Iftekhar Hossain, OC of Tahirpur Police Station, said that Nur Ahmad, who was initially arrested during police interrogation, gave information about those involved in coal smuggling who escaped with him. After verifying these information, those involved in Indian coal smuggling by evading customs duties will be brought under the law soon.
