The Election Commissioner (EC) has expressed the promise of fair elections under the current Election Commission. Alamgir. He said, the election must be fair. We guarantee that. As long as we are in this chair, we will work for fair elections.
In response to the questions of journalists at the election building of Agargaon in the capital on Thursday afternoon. Alamgir says these things.
Stating that the Election Commission will not make any compromise for the sake of a fair election, he said, “If we cannot organize a fair election, we will withdraw from the responsibility.”
EC Alamgir said, we will not be able to hold fair elections, we do not believe it. If you hypothetically say that it is not possible, then we will not fulfill that responsibility. If we can’t do the work we swore to do, then why stay in this chair?
Citing the example of Gaibandha by-election, he said, “We have written letters to take action against all those who worked in the administration, who were found negligent or who were involved in wrongdoing, and monitored it.” How many people have been taken action against, we are monitoring after one or two weeks. We cannot say the affiliation of the candidate. Those involved did not speak about the candidate. Why they did not say, that is the mystery.
When asked whether neutral elections are possible under the party government, Md. Alamgir said that it is possible if the commission wants. Elections are held under party governments in almost all countries of the world. It depends on how well the Election Commission fulfills its duties.
He said, why the EC could not do it in the past, the commission of the past can tell. The people of the previous commission and the current commission are different. Their behavior will not match their behavior.
In response to another question. Alamgir said, Election Commission’s responsibility is to conduct polls properly. Having a label playing field even before the election schedule is announced. Those who will take part in the elections should be able to campaign freely, so that the voters can come to the polling station and vote for the candidate of their choice, so that the counting of votes is done properly, so that the wishes of the voters are properly reflected in the election results – that is the responsibility of the EC. We are 100% committed to fulfilling that responsibility. We will do that.
In response to the question whether the EC will take responsibility for the dialogue to resolve the ongoing political crisis, he said, has the constitution given us that responsibility? We are empowered to take the views of various stakeholders, civil society. Not happening anymore. Maybe later. Dialogue can be with all political parties, and can be with some political parties.
