One death sentence and 3 life sentences for the murder of businessman Yunus in Jaintapur

In Sylhet’s Jaintapur, a young businessman, Yunus Ali (32), has been sentenced to death and life imprisonment to 3 persons. Besides, three of the seven accused have been acquitted in this case.

On Thursday (March 9), the judge of the Sylhet speedy trial tribunal said. Shahadat Hossain Pramanik announced this verdict.

The executed Qaish Ahmad is the son of Qutub Ali of Shyampur village in Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet. In addition to the death penalty, he was ordered to pay a fine of 20,000 taka, in another section a fine of 5,000 taka, in default of payment three months imprisonment without labour.

According to the court’s verdict, subject to the approval of the High Court Division, His Highness ordered the execution of the death penalty by tying the rope around the neck of the accused Qeesh Ahmad and hanging him till he dies. The death-sentenced Koych Ahmad can appeal against the verdict in the High Court within 7 days.

The other defendants in the case, Rasel Ahmad, son of Faizul Karim of Haripur village of the same upazila, and Jewel Ahmed, son of Lal Mia, were sentenced to life imprisonment under section 302, a fine of Tk 20,000, and in default of payment, another 3 months imprisonment without labor was ordered. Apart from this, under Section 201 of the Penal Code, both of them have been sentenced to 3 years imprisonment, a fine of Tk 5,000, and in default of payment they have been sentenced to another 3 months imprisonment. However, the judge ruled that both sentences will run together.

Another accused Bilal Ahmad, son of Mahmud Ali alias Haru Mia of Shyampur village in the same upazila, was also found guilty under section 302/34 and sentenced to life imprisonment under section 302, fine of 20 thousand taka, 3 months imprisonment without labor in default.

And 3 people were acquitted as the charges were not proved. They are Faizul Karim, Delwar Member and Emdad from the same area.

The court’s bench assistant Zainal Abedin confirmed the verdict.

Citing the case, court sources said that Yunus Ali, son of Haji Ibrahim Ali of Haripur of Jaintapur Upazila, disappeared on his way home on his motorcycle after closing the shop on December 29, 2014 at around 11:30 pm. Later on December 31, according to the information given by the accused Russell Ahmed, the body was buried in the ground behind the house of Haji Barkat Ullah in the area. In this incident, the victim’s father filed a case against 5 people named Ejaharnam and other unknown persons in Jaintapur police station as a plaintiff.

After investigating the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Farooq Ahmad filed a charge sheet in the court with the testimony of 21 people. Later the case went to PBI for investigation. On January 1, 2015, PBI inspector Vineet Kant Nath submitted the charge sheet to the court with the testimony of 31 people.

In 2019, when the case was transferred to this court for trial, it was recorded as session 517/’19. Then on February 5, 2017, the trial started by framing the charges against the defendants in the case. The court judge announced the verdict based on the long hearing and the testimony of 18 witnesses.
