Lakhs fined for illegal sand mining
Staff Reporter: A mobile court imposed a fine of Tk 1,00,000/- (one lakh) under the Sand and Soil Management Act, (2010) for the crime of illegal extraction of sand in the area of Garai Bridge (part of Chapra Union) of Kumarkhali Upazila of Kushtia District. On Sunday (February 12) afternoon, the Garai Bridge (Chapra Union part) of the upazila was raided by a mobile court for illegally extracting sand from the Garai River. 11 Offenses-4(b) punishable under Section 15(1) of Balu Mahal and Soil Management Act 2010 Assistant Commissioner (Land) Kumarkhali and Executive Magistrate Md. Amirul Arafat fined Billal Hossain (49), father- Ibrahim Sheikh Aruapara, Kushtia one lakh Taka. Confirming the matter, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Kumarkhali and Executive Magistrate Md. Amirul Arafat said that despite the lease of Balu Mahal in the upazila, sand and soil were being illegally mined from non-lease areas and near Garai Bridge. Being close to the bridge or road, such sand, soil lifting can cause serious damage to the bridge, road. In this area accidents also happen in sand transportation through trucks and trucks. If the incident is repeated in the future, the people involved will be brought to justice. This campaign will continue in public interest.
