Bag of Indian coal found in grocery store, 2 arrested

Police arrested two smugglers in Sunamganj’s Tahirpur along with sacks of stolen Indian coal stored in a grocery store.
On Wednesday (January 25), the arrested were sent to the district jail through the preliminary court.
The arrested are Arun Das, son of late Priyasindhu Das of Madanpur village of Tahirpur upazila, Salam Mia, son of Shekat Ali of Mirzakanda village of Shalla upazila. They were arrested from the grocery store in Sansar Bandh area adjacent to Madanpur village of the upazila.
Sunamganj district police media cell confirmed the information on Wednesday night.
According to the media cell, the police conducted a special operation on Tuesday on allegations that coal was imported from India and stored in grocery stores to sell it elsewhere by evading duty. The family then arrested shop owner Arun Das and his associate Salam along with 15 sacks of Indian coal brought duty-free from the grocery store in the village. At that time, 10 to 12 coal thieves and smugglers escaped.

Shahadat Hossain said that the detained accused were sent to the district jail through the court on Wednesday before filing the case. He also said that the police investigation is ongoing to identify the members of several organized groups who are involved in coal theft and smuggling and quickly bring them under the law.
