Journalists sit program in Gaibandha to protest false case

Press Club Gaibandha organized a pen break, camera down and stand program as part of the third day of the program to protest against the harassment false case against the editor of popular online news portal Dhakapost.com Mohiuddin Sarkar and Gaibandha representative Ripon Akander.
On Sunday (January 15) at 11 o’clock in the city Gorasthan intersection in front of the Press Club Gaibandha office this sit-in program was held for three hours. Press Club Gaibandha President Khaled Hossain presided over the ongoing protest program under the direction of General Secretary Javed Hossain, more than 150 journalists from several press clubs including Palashbari, Gobindganj and Phulchhari Upazila Press Clubs of Gaibandha were present.
In an emergency meeting at Press Club Gaibandha last Sunday (January 8) in protest against the filing of this false case of harassment, this pen break, camera down and location program was decided. Besides, according to the decision of the meeting, a human chain program was held in the district town on Tuesday (January 10) and a memorandum was given to the divisional commissioner on Thursday (January 12).

Apart from this, Ripon Akand, district representative of Dhaka Post and Press Club Gaibandha’s organizing secretary, and Robin Sen, district representative of Bangladesh Samachar Patrika and Senior Vice President of Press Club Gaibandha, gave speeches highlighting the main incidents of corruption and news in the protest program. At this time, demanding legal action against the chairman including immediate withdrawal of this case, the speakers said, about one and a half hundred journalists of the district are keeping their pens and cameras and are holding a sit-in program for half an hour against irregularities and harassing false cases. Today they are supposed to be in the field to fulfill their professional duties. If journalists and media are harmed in any way during the programme, then the corrupt people will have to take the responsibility.
The speakers pointed out multiple corruptions of the chairman and said that Chairman Mosabbir has been leading cow theft for a long time. He is also involved in all kinds of gambling in that union. He is a jail convict in a 2021 murder case.
In addition, the press club Gaibandha vice-president Robin Sen’s defamation case against Zilla Parishad Chairman Ataur Rahman’s son-in-law was also strongly protested and condemned. In addition, the formation of an investigation committee is also demanded for the incident. When Chairman Mosabbi’s embezzlement of government funds for the renovation of the mosque was revealed in the media, a lot of excitement was created in the area. This caused widespread criticism on social media. Chairman Mosabbir filed a case against Dhaka Post editor Mohiuddin Sarkar and Gaibandha representative Ripon Akander under the Harassment, False Extortion and ICT Act to cover up such corruption.
