Acting Chairman of BNP Tarek Rahman and his wife Dr. Court has ordered to confiscate Zobayda Rahman’s assets. After receiving the report of the execution of the arrest warrant issued against them, the senior judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Special Judge Court. Achaduzzaman gave this order on Thursday.
This has been confirmed by Assistant Director of ACC Aminul Islam. He said, this is the regular process of a case. If a fugitive accused fails to appear in court, the court orders attachment or seizure of his assets.
In an immediate reaction after the order, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury told the media that nobody in the country has any interest, trust and faith in these political cases. People are waiting for an elected government to come to power. That government will expose all these cases along with the nature of those involved in it.
On November 1 last year, the same court issued an arrest warrant after accepting the complaint brought against Tariq Rahman and his wife Jobaida on November 1 last year. At the same time, the court fixed January 5 for filing the Tamil report in this regard. A report was submitted to the court today.
According to the police report, the accused could not be found at their respective addresses. Then the court ordered to confiscate their assets. At the same time, the court directed the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Cantonment Police Station to submit a progress report regarding the seizure of assets by January 19.
On June 26 last year, the High Court declared Tarek and Zobayda as ‘fugitives’ on the charges of acquiring wealth beyond the known income and concealing information. At the same time, the High Court dismissed three separate writ petitions against them regarding corruption cases. At the same time, Tareq-Zobaida was declared a ‘fugitive’. The couple has been living in London since 2008.
The judgment of the High Court on that day also said that Tariq Rahman and Zobayda Rahman are absconding, so their writs are not acceptable. No lawyer can handle this case on their behalf. At the same time, he asked to send all the documents of this case to the judicial court of Dhaka. Besides, the High Court ordered to settle the case quickly.
On September 26, 2007, Tarek Rahman, his wife Dr. ACC filed a case against Zobayda Rehman and her mother-in-law Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu at the capital’s Kafrul police station. There are allegations of concealing and giving false information about assets worth 4 crore 81 lakh 53 thousand 561 rupees. Later in the same year, Tariq Rahman and Zobayda Rahman filed separate writ petitions in the High Court challenging the validity of the case. Meanwhile, the ACC issued a charge sheet in this case on March 31, 2008. When the defendants applied for cancellation of the case, the High Court suspended the proceedings of the case and issued a ruling.
BNP Chairperson former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s eldest son Tariq Rahman moved to London with his family after his release from prison in 2008. They have been living there for a long time. Tariq Rahman has already been sentenced in four cases including the grenade attack on August 21.
