In Sylhet, the leader of the Hindu Grand Alliance was jailed for 7 years for insulting religion

A court sentenced a leader of Jatiya Hindu Mahazot in Sylhet to seven years rigorous imprisonment for insulting religion. At the same time, he has been fined one lakh rupees, and in default of payment, he has been sentenced to one more year’s imprisonment.

Sylhet’s cyber tribunal judge (district and session judge) gave the verdict on Tuesday. Abul Kashem.

The convict Rakesh Roy is the organizing secretary of the Sylhet division of the Hindu Mahazot. Accused Rakesh Roy who was on bail was present in the court at that time. He was taken to prison after the verdict.

Confirming the verdict, Cyber Tribunal PP Mostafa Dilwar Al Azhar said that the case was initially filed under the ICT Act but later converted to the Digital Security Act.

In early June 2017, Rakesh Roy, son of the deceased Suresh Roy and leader of the Hindu Mahazat, of Keraiya village in Jokiganj upazila of Sylhet, made a post on his Facebook page. Later, when it spread, riots started in Sylhet. Then Maulana Fujael Ahmad, a resident of the same upazila, filed a case at Jokiganj police station on June 5 of that year, alleging insult and blasphemy.

Two days later, the police arrested him from the border area of Sylhet’s Jaintapur. Rakesh was released on bail from a long jail term last year. He was sent to jail after the verdict on Tuesday after being found guilty.
