A learned court sentenced a youth named Mehdi Hasan (18) to 14 years imprisonment in the case of rape of a schoolgirl in Gaibandha. A fine of one lakh taka has also been imposed.

Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman of the Gaibandha Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal-2 gave the verdict on Thursday (December 1). Accused Mehdi Hasan was not present in the court when the verdict was announced. State counsel Mahibul Haque confirmed the verdict.

According to the details of the case, Mehedi Hasan often harassed a schoolgirl of Harirampur village of Gobindganj upazila in Gaibandhar while traveling to school. On April 4, 2018, the schoolgirl went to her relative’s house in Khamar Jamira village of Palashbari upazila. On April 10 afternoon from that house, Mehdi Hasan kidnapped the schoolgirl while walking on the side street. Later, he was detained at an unknown place and raped. On April 16, the schoolgirl’s father filed a case under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act at the Palashbari police station as a plaintiff.

In this regard, the lawyer for the state, Mahibul Haque, said that the learned court gave this verdict because the accused was found guilty on the evidence.
