Bangladesh lost by 5 wickets against Pakistan yesterday in Super Twelve of T20 World Cup. The umpiring of this match was discussed overshadowing the defeat of the Tigers. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was a victim of TV umpire’s wrong decision.

Shakib went to the crease after Soumya Sarkar was dismissed by Shadab Khan in the eleventh over of the innings. He could not get the timing right when he left the crease in the first delivery and flicked it. The umpire gave a finger to the strong request. Ultra AJ was caught in the first replay after Shakib took the review, the ball hit the bat. Shakib went to the crease again and almost took a stun. Pakistani fielders also started moving to different positions. But TV umpire Langton Ruger of Zimbabwe felt that the catch at Ultra Edge was actually due to Shakib’s bat on the pitch.

From that idea he proceeded to the next process of review. As the ball hit the stumps, Shakib’s dismissal was upheld. Shakib was momentarily shocked to see the umpire’s finger raised. Raised both hands and expressed surprise. He stood in the crease for a while. He did not want to leave the wicket. Later he went to the umpires on the field and wanted to know something. At one point he had to leave the field.

Many people have questions, surprises and doubts about Shakib’s out. Umpires can make mistakes. But such mistakes by TV umpires are rare. Former West Indies captain Carl Hooper was the commentator in this match. He was shocked by the umpire’s decision. The comment of the all-rounder who played 102 Tests and 227 ODIs for the team, ‘What was that? What was Shakib’s LBW decision! Shocking.’ Adam Gilchrist, the tournament’s official broadcaster, commented in the room next to Hooper. At the end of the match, this Australian said Shakib’s out, “It is controversial.” Even with all the technology and replays it’s really hard to say. But after watching Ultra Edge, when the ball went past the bat, there was a sound. He immediately took the review, didn’t he?’ He added, ‘I don’t really know, I can only say what I saw. He felt disappointed and annoyed. But the third umpire decided, I’m sure, there will be a lot of discussion about that. The style of the game is like this.’ Another commentator and former cricketer Ian Smith also raised questions about the process of the TV umpire, ‘I don’t know what happened. It follows a process. But whatever process is followed, there should be an explanation.’

The Bangladesh team suffered bad umpiring against India in the previous match. The team regretted not getting 5 runs penalty from Virat Kohli’s ‘fake fielding’.

Bangladesh lost the match by 5 runs. The video clip that went viral on social media clearly showed that it was fake fielding. Later, former Indian batsman and cricket analyst Akash Chopra said that it was 100% fake fielding.
