Sitrang in Satkhira, coastal residents in fear, fear of risky embankment
Mir Khairul Alam: Cyclone Sitrang due to low pressure in Bay of Bengal may affect coastal district of Satkhira. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has given this information in a special weather bulletin (serial number-4) on Sunday (October 23) morning. At the same time, the Directorate informed about the danger of floods with heavy rain due to the effect of Cyclone Sitrang.
The cyclone may hit Satkhira coast next Tuesday (Tuesday 25) morning. The Meteorological Department has already issued a number one warning signal in the risk areas of the coastal areas.
Meanwhile, due to the impact of Cyclone Sitrang, the sky of Satkhira is cloudy since Sunday morning. Hundreds of thousands of people in the coastal areas are in fear of breaking the embankment due to the rise of tidal water in the rivers and streams of the coastal area.
And 200 km embankment of 35 points out of 700 km embankment under the Water Development Board on the Satkhira coast is at risk.
In this regard, Zulfikar Ali Ripon, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Meteorological Office, said that the cyclone is still in the Bay of Bengal in the form of low pressure. Satkhira may hit the coast on 25th i.e. Tuesday morning.
It has already been asked to adopt the number one warning signal in the dangerous areas of the coastal areas. Next warning signal will be given.
Abul Khair, Executive Engineer of Satkhira Water Development Board Division-1, said that there are 700 km embankments under the Satkhira Coast Water Development Board, of which 35 points of 200 km are vulnerable. Steps have already been taken to deal with the disaster in the risky areas.
