Case against 494 BNP activists in Sonaimuri

Police have filed a case against 494 people including BNP Central Joint Secretary General AMM Mahbub Uddin for attacking the police during the BNP-Awami League counter chase and clash in Sonaimuri, Noakhali. The case was filed by the Sub-Inspector (SI) of Sonaimuri Police Station, Shah Alam, on Saturday night.
Confirming the matter of the case, Sonaimuri Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Harun Or Rashid said that the names of 94 people including Mahbub Uddin have been mentioned in the case. The remaining 300 to 400 people have been named as unidentified accused. Among the other defendants in the case, the upazila BNP convener is notable
Anwarul Haque and municipal BNP convenor Motaher Hossain alias Manik.
OC Haroon Or Rashid said that the accused in this case have been accused of assaulting the police, obstructing government work, creating an unstable environment by exploding cocktails and damaging property. Two BNP workers have been arrested in the case. They have been sent to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Noakhali on Sunday afternoon. Efforts are on to arrest the rest of the accused.
In response to a question, Harun Or Rashid said that it is known that the party is preparing to file another case as Awami League people were injured in the clash. Legal action will be taken after receiving their written complaint.
Yesterday afternoon, BNP took out a protest march from Chhatarpaya intersection of Sonaimuri to protest against various mismanagement of the government, including increase in fuel and transport fares, rise in prices of daily necessities. Central Joint General Secretary Mahbub Uddin and National Executive Committee member Mamunur Rashid led the procession.
When the BNP procession came to the Sonaimuri Government Model High School road, the leaders and workers of the Awami League and allied organizations started throwing bricks from the opposite direction by detonating cocktails. This led to back and forth between the two sides. At least 15 leaders and activists of both sides were injured in this incident. Later, the police present at the spot chased the two parties in both directions and brought the situation under control.
