The Bangladesh Coast Guard has arrested two smugglers with 31 bhori of gold ornaments worth about 75 lakh taka from the New Fishery Ghat area adjacent to Cox’s Bazar Airport. This information was given by the Coast Guard’s media officer, Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, at a press briefing held in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday (August 23) morning. He gave details of the operation to local journalists at the press briefing.

The Coast Guard said that on Saturday (August 22) at around 7 pm, based on secret information, a team from BCG Station Cox’s Bazar conducted a special operation in the New Fishery Ghat area adjacent to the airport. At that time, a suspicious motorcycle was signaled to stop, and the riders tried to quickly flee. Later, the Coast Guard members chased and arrested two people along with the motorcycle. A bag carrying them was searched and 31 bhori ornaments worth about 75 lakh taka, four mobile phones, 5 thousand 742 taka in cash, 10 Saudi riyals and three Saudi Arabian ATM cards were seized.

At a press briefing, the Coast Guard’s media officer said that initial interrogation of the detainees revealed that the gold consignment was brought to Bangladesh from Dubai through various means to sell in the market. The detainees have admitted to being involved in gold smuggling several times before. Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan said that the Coast Guard’s intelligence surveillance and special operations will continue to identify and arrest other unscrupulous traders and associates involved in gold smuggling.

He said that the seized gold ornaments, along with other evidence and further legal action against the two detainees are under process. The Coast Guard said that such operations will continue in the future to prevent smuggling.
