The word telephone is no longer an old word, it is now a new emotion for prisoners. One-to-one intercom is used to meet prisoners in prisons.

A humane decision by the administration has reduced the distance between prisoners and their relatives many times over.

Although there are criminal prisoners inside the prison, the people outside the prison are not criminals. But for the sake of security, several types of iron gates and arrangements are made to talk at a distance. Due to which people have to talk while shouting, which is extremely inhuman.

Thinking about such suffering of people, the intercom communication system was introduced for the first time in Chittagong Jail with the help of Chittagong District Administration. Which created a new history in Chittagong Central Jail.

Due to this intercom system, prisoners will be able to talk to their relatives very easily. The sound waves that were created due to talking inside and outside the prison may no longer happen. Children will also be able to express their thoughts easily, which was not possible before.

Engineer Md. Nasir Uddin, head of the Alhaj Shamsul Haque Foundation, said that even in 2026, prisoners and their relatives have to shout to communicate. It is really inhumane that prisoners and their relatives who come to visit them abroad can see them clearly and speak clearly.

The project has been implemented with the funding of the Alhaj Shamsul Haque Foundation with the approval of the Prisons Department. As a pilot project, a total of 32 intercoms have been installed on the ground floor, 16 on each side—out of which 12 are allocated for male and 4 for female prisoners. There are plans to expand to the second floor in phases.

Senior Jail Superintendent Md. Iqbal Hossain said, “Now there is no need to shout. This system has been introduced on such a large scale in the Chittagong Prison for the first time among the prisons in the country.”

The service was officially inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Zahidul Islam on Thursday (March 5, 2026).

Speaking about the future, the Deputy Commissioner said, “With the advancement of technology, one day there may be a system to meet online or talk through video calls.”

Prison is not just a place of punishment—it is also a field of humane management.

The experience of those who spoke in clear voices on both sides of the grill today says that a humane decision by the administration can sometimes reduce a lot of distance.
