A clash took place between Itkhola and Mobarakpur villages in Atpara upazila of the district over a trivial incident.
About 10 shops were vandalized and 10 people were injured, including motorcycles. Chasing and counter-chasing, throwing bricks and tension continued between the two sides for three hours from 7 pm to 10 pm on Wednesday. After receiving the news of the clash, Atpara police station went to the spot twice and tried to control the situation, but the tension did not subside, and the situation became more complicated.
At one stage, Atpara Upazila Executive Officer Md. Shahnur Rahman, police and army members entered the field. Later, the situation came under control at night due to their activities and a calm atmosphere prevails in the area at present. It is learnt that many people from the two villages were injured in the incident. Among them, the condition of Rabiul, a resident of Itkhla Chakpara, is critical, according to local sources. Atpara Upazila Executive Officer Md. Shahnur Rahman urged everyone to remain calm and said that they have been asked to refrain from spreading rumors or unnecessary tension.
The administration is also keeping a close watch on the situation.
He said that law enforcement patrols are still continuing in the area in this incident.
