The long-standing suffering of river erosion victims in Chapainawabganj may soon end with the implementation of the “Padma Riverbank Protection Project (Phase-1).” On Friday, Shabbir Ahmed, Assistant Private Secretary to the Chief Adviser, visited the project area to observe its progress.
“The erosion of the Padma River is not just a geographical issue; it is a humanitarian one closely tied to people’s livelihoods,” said Shabbir Ahmed. “Once completed, this project will significantly ease the sufferings of the riverside communities.”
According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), the Padma River has caused severe erosion over a 25.35-kilometer stretch—11.15 km on the left bank and 14.20 km on the right. Hundreds of families have lost their homes, croplands, and mango orchards due to the shifting river, influenced by the Farakka Barrage.
The project, designed by the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM), includes permanent and precautionary protection work in Shibganj and Sadar upazilas. It is scheduled to run from November 2025 to June 2029 at an estimated cost of Tk 751 crore.
Once implemented, the project will prevent further erosion, protect public and private property, preserve agricultural land, and create new employment opportunities in the region.

During the visit, BWDB officials, union parishad representatives, and hundreds of local residents were present. Shabbir Ahmed visited several erosion-affected areas and exchanged views with the locals, assuring them of the government’s firm commitment.
“This project will not only protect riverbanks but also secure homes, livelihoods, and agriculture. It will stand as a milestone in the government’s development efforts,” he added.
During the visit, BWDB Executive Engineer S. M. Ahsan Habib, local union parishad chairmen, members and many residents of the riverside areas were present.
