A press conference and human chain were held to demand the removal of the confusion between the names “Rupsha College” and “Rupsha Government College”. The press conference was held at 10:30 am in the teachers’ room of Rupsha College on Thursday September 18 , and a human chain was held in front of the college after the press conference. Rupsha College Acting Principal Md. Shahidullah read out a written statement at the press conference. The written complaint states that Rupsha College was established in 1986 and has continued to progress as a symbol of the genuine love and tradition of the local people on the east bank of the Rupsha River. For nearly four decades, this institution has enlightened thousands of students with the light of knowledge. On the other hand, Bangabandhu College, established in 1972 on the banks of the Bhairab River at the other end of Rupsha Upazila, has been recently renamed as Rupsha Government College by the government’s decision. But such naming has created various kinds of confusion, especially in educational institutions in this region. For example, important letters come by post from Rupsha College are mistakenly going to Rupsha Government College, and letters from government colleges are going to Rupsha College. Students are being confused in the online admission process. This year, about 50 students are applying to Rupsha Government College by mistake despite wanting to get admitted to Rupsha College. Although nearly 300 students apply for the honors course every year for good results, this year only 25 students have applied. As a result, the educational activities of the institution are facing serious losses. To remove this confusion, the college authorities have considered it necessary to change the name of the newly named “Rupsha Government College” by the government. Government Bhairab College” (because the college is located on the banks of the Bhairab River) ‘Government Belfulia College” (as it is locally known by its former name).
The college authorities and teachers have strongly demanded that the government take measures to quickly resolve this confusion and protect Rupsha College.
Present at the press conference and human chain were Teachers Council General Secretary Md. Nasir Uddin, Teacher Representative Uddhav Chandra Pal, Md. Imdadul Haque, Nasrin Sultana Lima, Assistant Professor Hafizur Rahman, Shyamal Kumar Das, Sultan Ahmed, Nusrat Jahan Mili, Sheikh Arifuzzaman, Md. Shahidullah, Rezaul Karim, KM Basar, Shihab Uddin and other teachers.
