3 workers killed, 2 injured as roof of abandoned building collapses in Netrakona

Three workers were killed when the roof of an abandoned building of the BADC (Irrigation) office in the Nagra area of the district headquarters collapsed and they were buried under it. Two others were also injured. The accident occurred around 4:45 pm on Thursday. Netrokona Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Shahnewaz confirmed this information. The deceased workers are: Abdus Salam (40) of Matikata village in Atpara upazila, Abdul Hannan (42) of Hatkhla village in Sadar upazila, and Dipu Mia (40) of Palash Hati village. In addition, two injured workers named Saiful and Hasan were rescued from the scene and admitted to the District Sadar Hospital. Eyewitness and worker Nachu Sardar said that the six of them were removing an abandoned building of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC-Irrigation) under a contracting company. At around 4:45 pm, during the demolition, the roof of the garage section of the building suddenly collapsed. At that time, five workers were trapped under the roof. Upon receiving the news, the fire brigade and local people rushed to the spot and carried out the rescue work. Netrokona Fire Service Station officer Azizur Rahman said, “We found three people dead and two injured.” “We have rescued the injured and sent them to the hospital.” Netrokona Model Police Station OC Kazi Shahnewaz said, “An autopsy report has been prepared for the deceased and sent to the morgue.” Legal action will be taken after talking to their relatives. Meanwhile, many people present at the scene said that none of the workers engaged in demolishing the building had any protective equipment.
