National and International Youth Day celebrated in Durgapur
Sajim Shine, Durgapur (Netrakona)
On the occasion of the day, rallies, oath-taking, discussion meetings, training certificates and tree saplings were distributed. A discussion meeting was held at the Upazila Parishad Hall on Tuesday (August 12) with the participation of citizens from different walks of life. Durgapur Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Afroza Afsana was present as the chief guest. Upazila Youth Development Officer Abul Khair Nur Mohammad presided over the program. The program, moderated by Upazila Academic Supervisor Nasir Uddin, was addressed by former Deputy Commander and freedom fighter Sohrab Hossain Talukder, Durgapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahmudul Hasan, development worker Rupan Kumar Sarkar, Press Club President Tobarak Hossain Khokon, Journalists Association President Dilwar Hossain Talukder, and Jamaat-e-Islami Municipal Branch President Habibur Rahman. During the discussion at the event, speakers said that youth are the main drivers of development and production. In order to harness the power of youth and transform technology-based youth into human resources, youth must be involved in job-oriented training, provision of self-employment loans, and organization-based volunteer and service activities. They also said that the ability to use technology is a great asset for young people. Utilizing this skill to create self-employment will benefit not only the individual, but also society and the country. It is worth noting that the United Nations’ World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, held in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1998, proposed celebrating August 12 as International Youth Day to promote the development and advancement of youth. The following year, on December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly decided to celebrate the day as ‘International Youth Day’. Since then, the day has been celebrated in various countries around the world.
