Comilla University (CoU) is facing controversy after several students allegedly defaced parts of the university’s main entrance with spray paint in the name of demanding the formation of the Central Students’ Union (CoUCSU).  The incident‚ which took place around 2:00 PM on Tuesday (29 July), involved slogans such as “CoUCSU Chai” (“We Want CoUCSU”) sprayed in black and blue colors on key areas of the gate, drawing widespread criticism from the student body.
Many students took to social media to express their anger, condemning the act as a disgraceful way of protesting and calling for disciplinary action against those involved for damaging the university’s appearance. Law Student Md. Salman Hossain stated‚ ‘You may demand CoUCSU that is your right. But you do not have the right to ruin the beauty of a public university. Treating the campus like your ancestral property is unacceptable. The administration must take action against those responsible for this damage.’
Md. Hannan Rahim, a student of the Mathematics Department and convener of the ‘Inquilab Moncho’, commented‚ ‘CoUCSU is a legitimate demand of all students. However, defacing the university gate in this manner will only invite criticism from fellow students. This was a very lame act. The university gate is a symbol of the campus’s beauty.’ He further expected the administration to take responsibility and issue show-cause notices to the offenders.’ One of the individuals involved, Naeem Bhuiyan, admitted to the act, saying‚ ‘When we did it, we didn’t realize it would spoil the university’s appearance. It was an illogical decision. We will do our best to restore the gate’s original look.’
Commenting on the matter, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Hakim, the Proctor of the university, said‚ ‘This clearly falls under disciplinary violation. We are collecting the names of those involved, and action will be taken against them. For now, efforts are being made to remove the spray paint.’ The incident has reignited debate over the means and responsibility of student activism, with many urging that rightful demands should not come at the cost of institutional dignity.
