Today, the Department of Environment (DoE) conducted three mobile court operations in Barishal, Jashore, and Chandpur districts. These operations targeted the production, sale, supply, and marketing of banned polythene bags, in violation of Section 6(a) of the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995 (Amended 2010). During these drives, seven cases were filed, resulting in a total of BDT 43,000 in fines and the seizure of 586 kg of banned polythene. Immediate action was taken against various shops, including several superstores, where banned polythene was found, and legal measures were initiated against the owners. Simultaneously, general traders and the public were issued cautionary messages against polythene use. It’s worth noting that since November 3, 2024, the Department of Environment has conducted 492 mobile court operations nationwide. These drives have led to fines totaling BDT 6,859,100 against 925 establishments and the seizure of approximately 251,372 kg of banned polythene. Additionally, utility connections to 16 polythene manufacturing factories have been disconnected and sealed. The Department of Environment stated that such operations will continue across the country to protect the environment. A zero-tolerance policy against banned polythene will be enforced through a combination of public awareness and legal action.
