Today, May 3, marks World Press Freedom Day, an occasion celebrated globally to recognize the importance of free and independent journalism. This year’s theme is “A Brave New World of Reporting: The Impact of AI on Free Media.”
The United Nations officially recognized this day in 1993 following recommendations from UNESCO’s 26th General Conference in 1991. Since then, media professionals around the world have observed this day as a time to reflect on press freedom and journalists’ rights.
On this occasion, discussions center on the role of journalists in upholding press freedom, the commitment to resisting interference in journalism, and honoring courageous journalists worldwide.
In Bangladesh, several events are being held to mark the day. These include a conference titled “Brave New Bangladesh: Reform Roadmap for the Press,” featuring Interim Government Adviser for Information & Broadcasting Md. Mahfuz Alam, and Chief Speaker Kamal Ahmed, the head of the Media Reform Commission.
Additionally, Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media (BJIIM) is hosting a symposium on “Bangladesh After the Monsoon Uprising: The Media Landscape.” Meanwhile, UNESCO Dhaka Office, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), and the Swedish Embassy are jointly organizing a special event in Dhanmondi.
On this occasion, Paris-based organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has released the World Press Freedom Index 2025, ranking Bangladesh 149th among 180 countries, an improvement from 165th in 2024. Bangladesh’s score has risen to 33.71, compared to 27.64 last year.
