A mother and two children attempted suicide by consuming poison in Kalikapur village of Krishnanagar union in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira. The incident took place on Wednesday (January 29) afternoon. The two children died while undergoing treatment when their neighbours rescued them quickly and took them to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex. As the mother’s condition was critical, she was sent to Satkhira Medical College Hospital (Samech) for advanced treatment. The two children who died were Hasan Sheikh’s sons Mahir (5) and Aryan (9 months) and his wife Ratna Khatun (30) of Kalikapur village. Neighbours said that due to family disputes, the husband and wife often quarrelled. At one stage, the wife Ratna Khatun, feeling proud of everyone’s absence at home, made her two sons drink poison and drank it herself. When the news came to light, they were quickly rescued and admitted to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex. Dr. Sakir Hossain, a medical officer on duty at the emergency department at Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex, declared the two sons dead. However, he said the mother’s condition was critical. Shyamnagar Police Station OC Md. Humayun Kabir Molya confirmed the incident and said that necessary action will be taken after investigating the complaint.
