In Gazipur Sadar Upazila, his children brought a sick old man to an old age home and left him in the jungle. Later, through the humanitarian efforts of Joydebpur Police Station, the elderly Shakib Ali Sardar was finally placed in the Manipur Elderly Rehabilitation Center in Gazipur Sadar Upazila.
The rescued old man is Shakib Ali Sardar, son of the late Abdur Rashid of Chardipur village of Gosairhat Police Station in Shariatpur district. He has a son and two daughters. He lived in the house of his eldest daughter in Badda area of Dhaka.
On December 4, his children tried to take the old man to the B.K. Bari Old Age Home in Mirzapur Union of Gazipur Sadar Upazila. But when the old age home authorities expressed their inability to keep him due to illness, the children left him in the jungle. After lying there helplessly for three days, locals informed the police.
Joydebpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Halim went to the spot and rescued the old man. At that time, he was in a very dirty condition, his feet were covered in feces and urine, and a cannula was inserted for his urinary tract.
With the help of locals, the old man was cleaned and admitted to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital. He was undergoing treatment there for 20 consecutive days. However, none of his children have come to check on him so far.
When the old man’s physical condition improved, the hospital authorities allowed him to be released. Then on Tuesday (December 23) at around 8 pm, Joydebpur Police Station OC Abdul Halim took him to the Manipur Elderly Rehabilitation Center in Gazipur Sadar Upazila in a police car on his own initiative. There, he explained the old man to the authorities and promised all kinds of cooperation.
OC Halim said, “It is our responsibility to stand by such helpless people. I will try so that he can spend the rest of his life in peace.”
The locals have highly appreciated the OC’s humanitarian initiative in this incident. They said that such an initiative will revive human values in the society.
After getting a place at the rehabilitation center, Shakib Ali Sardar said, “Even though my children abandoned me, Allah has sent such people to help me. I am grateful for this love.”
This incident has once again proven that humanity is still alive. OC Halim’s initiative has set an exemplary example in the society.
