BSMMU arranged seminar and rally  on the occasion of World Disability Day-2024

International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 was celebrated at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University-BSMMU.
Professor Dr. M. A. Shakur has proposed the formation of a ‘Super Specialized Rehabilitation Center for “The July 24 Warrior” to accelerate the treatment and rehabilitation of those injured in the anti-discrimination student movement.

Yasin Arafat, who was injured in the anti-discrimination student-public movement, told his story of recovering from the brink of paralysis with the medical services of the Department of Physical Medicine. He participated in the student movement in August and suffered a serious injury to his waist. Later, he came to BSMMU for medical services in a wheelchair. He could not even imagine that he would ever be able to stand up straight, let alone walk. However, he is now able to walk with the medical services under the supervision of Professor Dr. M. A. Shakur, Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of BSMMU and President of the Long-Term Treatment Cell for Patients Injured in the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, and he told the story of that victory.

Today, Tuesday, December 3, 2024, the importance of physical rehabilitation treatment The day was celebrated to highlight the importance of the day. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of BSMMU organized the event. This year’s theme is “Enhancing Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future”

The day began with a rally at 8:30 am led by Professor Dr. M. A. Shakur, President of the Long-Term Treatment Cell for Patients Injured in the Anti-Discrimination Student Mass Movement. Former Professor Dr. Mohammad Mainuzzaman, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, was present as the chief guest at the event.

Later, in the scientific seminar held, Professor Dr. M. A. Shakur, President of the Long-Term Treatment Cell for Patients Injured in the Anti-Discrimination Student Mass Movement, proposed the formation of a Super Specialized Rehabilitation Center for the July 24 Warrior to accelerate the treatment and rehabilitation activities of the injured in the anti-discrimination student movement.

A scientific session was held at 9 am at the university’s Professor Kamrul Islam Seminar Hall, where leading doctors and experts from the country discussed various aspects of physical rehabilitation and its future. The scientific session was presided over by Professor Dr. M. A. Shakur, Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of BSMMU and President of the Long-Term Treatment Cell for Patients Injured in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, Secretary of the Bangladesh Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, was present as a special guest.

Medical services were provided to 296 patients injured in the anti-discrimination student movement in various departments of BSMMU, including 58 patients in the emergency department, 53 patients in the cabin, 152 patients in the outpatient department of the super specialized hospital, 24 patients in the internal department, and 10 patients in the ICU.

The seminar was attended by Professor Dr. Md. Moniruzz,aman Khan, Professor Dr. Taslim Uddin, Dr. Ziaur Rahman Chowdhury, Dr. Badrunnesa Ahmed, Dr. Md. Golam Nabi, Dr. Sabbir Zaman Rocky, Dr. Farzana Khan Soma, and other teachers, doctors, resident students of the department.
