A United Nations team arrived in Dhaka on Thursday on an eight-day visit to discuss the process of investigating human rights violations in light of the recent violence and unrest.
The United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office in Bangladesh said in a statement, “A team from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights will visit Dhaka from August 22 to August 29 for preliminary discussions with the interim government and other stakeholders. The purpose of this visit is to understand the priority in supporting the development of human rights.”
“It is important that the visit is not an investigation but a discussion on the process of investigating human rights violations in light of the recent violence and unrest during this successful period,” the statement said.
According to the United Nations Resident Coordination Office, this visit is being held at the request of the Interim Government of Bangladesh.
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk announced the move during a recent phone conversation with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
The government is ready to cooperate with the UN team to ensure a fair and impartial investigation.
According to the Office of the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations, the United Nations team will not give interviews to the media during the visit.
