Even after 52 years of the Liberation War, no initiative has been taken to identify and preserve the Tekipara wasteland of Tangail’s Sakhipur.
The local residents have demanded that the land be recovered and a ‘memorial’ be built there to preserve the memory of the martyrs. The land is located on the north-east side of the house of freedom fighter Naresh Chandra Sarkar in Tekipara area of Hatibandha village of the upazila.
Local freedom fighters said that on August 16, 1971, the Pakistani invaders surrounded the Kamaliachala market of Hatibandha union of the upazila. Sanatan religious followers of Chawali village in Mirzapur tied 10 traders and took them to the forest.
There, those 10 traders were lined up and shot dead by the invading forces. They threw the bodies in the forest. There the dead bodies were destroyed.
Upazila Freedom Fighters Command and former commander MO Gani said that it is necessary to build a ‘memorial’ to preserve the place.
Upazila Freedom Fighter Command Administrator Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Hossain Patuari said that a proposal has been sent to the relevant ministry for the construction of the memorial.
