Political case against 2.5 lakh activists of BNP

About half of BNP’s 500,000 members, i.e. 2500,000 leaders and workers, have had political cases against them. Activist leaders and organizers of the group are facing dozens and even hundreds of cases. As a result, before the national elections, activists have to be busy with court appearances and litigation rather than agitation.
The New York Times reported this information in a report on Saturday. According to the report, thousands of activists and supporters of the opposition party have to stand before the judge almost every day. But the charges brought against most are vague and weak.
Recently, BNP leader Saiful Alam Nirab was taken to the magistrate court of the capital. He has 317 to 394 cases in his name. He and his lawyers could not say the exact number of cases. BNP leaders claim that after the Awami League came to power in 2009, about 800 of their leaders and activists have been killed and 400 have gone missing.
A few days ago BNP organized a rally in the capital. There they demanded free and fair elections and the release of detained party politicians. At the same time, a rally was also organized by the ruling party. There, the leaders criticized the position of the European Union and the United States on the upcoming elections in Bangladesh. The United States has recently announced a visa policy for Bangladesh ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Human rights activists complain that the defendants in the case stay in jail for months and are subjected to various harassments. According to lawyers, getting bail in political cases has become difficult.
