In the first six months of this year, 131 people were killed and 110 injured in 137 railway accidents in the country. Of these, 37 people lost their lives and eight were injured in a maximum of 44 accidents in February. A minimum of 12 accidents resulted in 15 deaths in January.

These statistics were highlighted in a press release of Shipping and Communication Reporters Forum (SCRF), Dhaka media workers’ organization on Saturday. It is said that these statistics have been prepared on the basis of regular monitoring of railway accidents and information published in the media.

According to statistics, 15 people lost their lives in 18 accidents in March, 20 in 17 accidents in April, 25 in 24 accidents in May and 19 in 22 accidents in June. In these accidents, 5 people were injured in March, 69 in April, 8 in May and 13 in April.

How many factors have been identified for railway accidents in observation? These are indifference of the authorities, defects in signaling system, dangerous level crossings, addition of extra coaches to engine capacity, dangerous railway bridges, lack of modern technology, shortage of manpower, shortage of stones on the railway line, use of low quality sleepers, fish plates and other materials.

It is said in the observation that despite the expansion of the railway line, the high-speed train movement is being disrupted due to the lack of proper renovation of the old lines. It does not have the desired effect.
