Councilor candidate Aftab’s candidature is cancelled

The Election Commission (EC) has canceled the candidature of Aftab Hossain Khan, the councilor candidate for Ward No. 7 in the upcoming Sylhet City Corporation elections, for conducting an armed exercise in front of the rival candidate’s house.
On Wednesday (June 14), Election Commission Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam confirmed this information to reporters.
He said – a complaint has been received against Aftab Hussain Khan (kite symbol), a councilor candidate for General Ward No. 7 of Sylhet City Corporation, with his supporters in front of the rival candidate’s house. The issue has been publicized through CCTV footage, video images and social media including various print and electronic media. Moreover, the council candidate of that ward, Syed Mohammad Abdullah (Latim Pratik) has filed a written complaint and statement with the commission in this regard.
Based on the complaint and statement, the Returning Officer investigated and submitted a report in this regard where the truth of the incident was found.
The EC directs the concerned councilor candidates to appear personally before the Election Commission and explain why disciplinary action will not be taken against them, as per rules 31 and 32, for violation of rule 30 of the City Corporation Election Conduct Rules 2016.
Finally, the EC canceled Aftab’s candidacy after hearing on Wednesday.
