EC’s letter to local administration to be strict in four city elections

The Election Commission (EC) has directed the local administration to be strict in observing the code of conduct in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet City Corporation elections. Police Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) of these four cities have been told to prevent all activities of violating the code of conduct at any cost.
Next June 12 Khulna, Barisal and June 21 Rajshahi, Sylhet City Corporation Election. It is said that the EC has given these special instructions to prevent showdown between the candidates during the filing of nomination papers in these four city elections.

Meanwhile, Election Commissioner said action may be taken against Awami League candidate Azmat Ulla Khan for violating the code of conduct during the submission of nomination papers for the Gazipur City Corporation election on April 27. Alamgir. He said that he has been asked to come to the Election Commission and give an explanation.
If the explanation is not satisfactory, he will face punishment.

The EC has earlier written to the Cabinet Secretary, General Secretary of Awami League and General Secretary of Jatiya Party to prevent violation of code of conduct in elections. According to the press release of the Election Commission on Tuesday, written instructions have been given to the local administration, Metropolitan Police Commissioner and District Commissioners of Khulna, Barisal, Rajshahi and Sylhet City Corporation. It is said that during the collection and submission of nomination papers, the trend of some candidate’s procession, motorcycle procession or showdown is being observed. Referring to the City Corporation (Election Conduct) Rules in this regard, the letter said that no procession or showdown can be held during the collection and submission of nomination papers, nor can candidates with more than five supporters collect and submit nomination papers. No procession or showdown of any kind will be allowed. No candidate or any political party on his behalf, any other person, organization or institution – shall be allowed to carry out procession or torch procession or any other kind of procession with any truck, bus, motorcycle, boat, train or any other mechanical vehicle.

Azmat can face punishment
Electoral Commissioner Md said that disciplinary action will be taken against mayoral candidate Azmat Ulla Khan if he does not give a satisfactory explanation for the violation of the code of conduct. While talking to the journalists at his office in the election building yesterday, he also said that it has appeared to the commission after watching the media footage that Azmat Ulla Khan violated the election code of conduct while submitting the nomination papers. For that he has been asked to appear in the election building on May 7 and show the reason. No problem if he gives a satisfactory explanation. But if the explanation is not satisfactory, some punishment will be given to him. The punishment will depend on the seriousness of the crime. The commissioner mentioned that the law also has provisions for reprimand, jail-fine and disqualification of candidature.

Regarding the violation of the code of conduct of ministers and MPs, the commissioner said that many people may not be aware of the law. For that, the Commission has sent a letter to inform them through the Cabinet. In response to another question, he said that everyone should follow the rules. Returning officers, executive magistrates will take action if the code of conduct is not followed. After that, the commission also has the power to cancel the candidature.
