Qatar bans alcohol at World Cup

Only one day left for the World Cup. This time, Qatar banned the sale of beer in eight venues during the World Cup.

The Greatest Show on Earth will hit the screens on Sunday. Qatar has been preparing for a long decade. News from The New York Times.

Qatar made this decision amid months of controversy with the International Football Federation (FIFA).

FIFA initially allowed sponsor Budweiser to sell beer at World Cup venues. But Qatar rejected that decision. The Muslim-dominated country was already in this position.

Qatar’s Supreme Committee on Delivery and Legacy has promised alcohol will be available in designated ‘fan zones’ outside stadiums and other hospitality venues. It will not be found anywhere else.

Last September, World Cup organizers in Qatar finalized a policy to serve beer, including alcohol, to soccer fans in stadiums and fan zones.

In Qatar, the sale of alcohol is prohibited in all restaurants that are not associated with luxury international hotels or resorts. But with permission from the authorities, foreign nationals can buy bottles of liquor, beer and wine for home consumption at a Qatar Airways-run depot on the outskirts of the capital Doha.

Before this, drugs were banned in the venue of the 1986 season. It was also banned in the 2014 World Cup. In the past, global football tournament organizers have also been successful in this regard.
