Students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUSTU) have continued their agitation demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed in the wake of the police attack. They have been protesting on campus since Monday morning, rejecting the announcement of the closure of the university. Later, the students protested against the position in the roundabout of the university. Earlier, they marched around the campus in procession. It was attended by several hundred students from different halls including student halls. At that time, the students demanded that the proctorial committee and the student advisor should resign as they had failed in their duty. Otherwise the movement will be intensified.

Meanwhile, an eight-member investigation committee has been formed into the incident of attack and clash on students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet. Professor of Mathematics. Rashed Talukder has been made the head of the committee. Shabi Vice-Chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed confirmed the matter and said, “This committee has been formed to look into the incident on Sunday.” The committee has been asked to submit a report soon.

On the other hand, students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet have been protesting for the fourth day in a row. Hundreds of students chanted slogans in front of the Vice Chancellor’s.residence and at the main entrance of the university till the last news was received (5 pm) and demanded the resignation of Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed. It is learned that Shabi has been agitating again since Monday morning demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed, Proctorial Committee and Student Welfare Adviser. They announced they would not leave campus. However, following the instructions of the authorities, some students were seen leaving the hall this morning. They left the hall out of panic. Hundreds of students of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall started agitation from last Thursday night demanding resignation of the principal and assistant principal of the university, removal of all mismanagement and ensuring a healthy and normal environment and appointment of student friendly and responsible principal committee. It was alleged that the leaders and activists of the student league of the university attacked the students’ program last Saturday evening. Then the situation became cloudy.

On Sunday (January 16), Shabi was in full swing. The students blocked the Vice Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed. Police went into action to rescue him. Fifty students were injured by their rubber bullets, sound grenades and batons. During the chase, university teachers, employees, police members and BCL leaders and activists were also injured.

Meanwhile, Shabi Vice-Chancellor, who was released with the help of police last evening, sat in an emergency syndicate meeting. It was decided that the university would remain closed indefinitely. Students were instructed to leave the hall by 12 noon on Monday (today). But the students refused the instructions of the authorities. They protested almost all night on Sunday. Then on Monday morning the movement started again in Shabi. Shabi is now in full swing in this movement with the spontaneous participation of ordinary students. The agitating students have been protesting on several occasions since morning. At around 12:30 pm, the students locked Shabir Bangabandhu Hall, Syed Mujtaba Ali Hall, First Student Hall and Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall (Second Student Hall). Outraged students protested in front of Shahparan Hall. At that time no one from Shabiprabi administration was allowed to enter the hall. It was seen on the spot that some students had left the halls. They go out with their belongings. Some students said that they were leaving the hall out of fear and panic over the way the situation has become murky and the police and Chhatra League have taken a deadly stand. It is to be mentioned that the Shabi students have been agitating for three points including the resignation of the provost committee of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Student Hall alleging misconduct. Students of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Student Hall staged a protest in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence from 9pm to 3pm last Thursday. They were holding a meeting with the administration but the demand was not met. Meanwhile, the BCL was accused of attacking the protesters on Saturday evening. In protest, the students announced boycott of class-examinations of all departments for an indefinite period.
