The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of the police has arrested two active members of the banned militant group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). The operation was carried out in the Kalibari Mosque area of Chenchua Bazar of Muktagachha Police Station in Mymensingh on Thursday.
The arrested are Kawsar Ahmed Milon and Zahid Mostafa. Two mobile phones, four SIM cards, soft copies of seven extremist books and printed copies were seized from them. Among them are books by Al Balag, Titumir Media, Saham Al Hind Media, Jasimuddin Rahmani and Anwar Al Awlaki. In addition, 34-page screenshots of their organization’s extremist activities and book sales have been seized from Facebook and Messenger.
ATU Media and Awareness Branch Superintendent of Police Mohammad Aslam Khan said the arrestees had been using social media for a long time to sell extremist books online by ABT chief Mufti Jasimuddin Rahmani and other authors. They planned and prepared for conspiracies against the government and the state, creating panic in the minds of the people and endangering public safety. Among them, Kawsar has been involved in collecting and selling ABT ideology books from different parts of Dhaka for 9 years. And Zahid had been supporting him for two years.
The police superintendent said they used to sell books of extremist ideology to ABT members across the country using multiple fake Facebook IDs behind a bookstore in Chenchua Bazaar.
