Two people were killed and 13 others injured in separate incidents in Bajitpur and Tarail upazilas of Kishoreganj district.
A 65-year-old man named Md Mujibur Rahman was killed in a clash between supporters of two former and current UP chairmen at Bajitpur in the district. At least 10 people, including women, were injured in the incident. Five of them have been admitted to Bajitpur Zahurul Islam Medical College Hospital in critical condition. They are Chan Mia (54), Tara Mia (52), Hosne Ara (55), Lokman Mia (40) and Abu Taher Member (57). The incident took place at Bahernagar village in Dilalpur union of the upazila on Monday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Mujibur Rahman, son of late Sheikh Abdul Malek of Bahernagar village. He was a supporter of Mizbah Uddin Khan Shafi, president and former chairman of the local Bahernagar Jame Mosque.
According to police and multiple local sources, Golam Kibria Novel, the current chairman of Dilalpur Union in Bajitpur, and Mizbah Uddin Khan Shafi, the former chairman, have been campaigning in advance to contest for the chairmanship in the next elections. Locally, their supporters have split into two camps and are trying to dominate the area. Tensions escalated when the two sides clashed on Sunday in Bahernagar village. As a result, the two sides clashed with domestic weapons on Monday afternoon. Mujibur Rahman was killed on the spot by a spear thrown by his opponent. Besides, at least 10 people including Mujibur Rahman’s wife Farida Khatun (55), Chan Mia, Tara Mia, Hosne Ara, Lokman Mia and Abu Taher members were injured. Upon receiving the news, the police went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police have been deployed in the area to avoid renewed clashes.
On the other hand, a man named Mohammad Shafiqul Islam (35) was killed in a clash between two parties over control of Jalmahal in Tarail district. At least three others were injured in the incident. The incident took place in front of Dubail Bill in Digdair Union of the upazila around 7pm on Monday. The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam, son of Moti Miah of Digdair village.
According to police and local sources, the villagers were having a dispute with the people of Sadek Vender in Digdair Purbapara over the dominance of Dubail Bill Jalmahal. As a result, the two sides clashed with domestic weapons at around 6 pm. Shafiqul Islam, a supporter of Sadeq Vendor, was seriously injured in the clash. He was rushed to Tarail Upazila Health Complex where he was pronounced dead by the on-duty doctor. Besides, three of the injured have been admitted to Tarail Upazila Health Complex. The condition of one of them is said to be critical.
Officer-in-charge of Bajitpur and Tarail police stations confirmed the incident and said appropriate legal action was being taken.
