Two Indian soldiers killed in anti-terror operation

International Desk /

Two Indian soldiers have been killed in a counter-terrorism operation in Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir’s Punch district, state media say.

The two were killed in a shootout with terrorists in the Punch-Rajouri forest on Thursday night.
A few days ago, five more Indian soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack in the same area.

An army official was among those killed on Thursday, NDTV quoted officials as saying.

It is believed that a group of members of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba has taken refuge in the forest of Punch. Upon receiving the news, the Indian army launched an operation.

The campaign is still going on; The Jammu-Punch-Rajouri highway has been closed due to the operation.

“Terrorists exchanged fire with army personnel on the evening of October 14 during an ongoing counter-terrorism operation in the Nar Khas forest in the Mendhar sub-division of Punch,” the army said in a statement.

According to NDTV, the Indian Army has been pursuing the three terrorists for the past few days, but the terrorists have taken advantage of the high mountains and jungles to keep them out of their reach.

Later on Thursday evening there were intense gunfire between the two sides.

One of the dead was a junior commissioned officer (JCO), Indian media reported.

The JCO was one of five Indian soldiers killed in a shootout with terrorists in the same area last week.
