Today is the 72nd birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, one of the organizers of the Liberation War, a prominent sports and cultural figure.
Sheikh Kamal, a multi-faceted creative genius, was born on this day in 1949 in Tungipara, Gopalganj. On the night of August 15, 1975, at the tender age of 26, he was martyred by the brutal and brutal slaughter of the hated enemies who had killed the Father of the Nation.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the main target of the infernal massacre on the 15th of August, but his eldest son Sheikh Kamal was the first to be martyred. After introducing Bangabandhu’s son, the disgusting coward Major (dismissed) Bazlul Huda killed Sheikh Kamal with his stengun. Shaheed Sheikh Kamal, a shining symbol of youth with multi-dimensional unique creative talent, passed BA Honors from the Department of Sociology, Dhaka University after passing secondary from Shaheen School, Dhaka and Higher Secondary from Dhaka College. Sheikh Kamal was also a student of the Setar Badan Department of Chayanat, one of the sources of education in the field of art, literature and culture in Bangladesh. Sheikh Kamal was one of the foremost organizers of the Mancha Natak movement for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of post-independence post-war Bangladesh as well as for the upliftment of the backward sections of the society.
Sheikh Kamal, a multi-talented artist, formed the ‘Spondon’ group of artists. He was also one of the founders of Dhaka Theater. He was also established as an actor in Dhaka University’s Natangan. From his childhood, Sheikh Kamal was very enthusiastic in various sports including football, cricket, hockey and basketball. He was one of the founders of Abahani Sports Club, one of the sports organizations of the subcontinent and the pioneer of modern football.
The death of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal contributed immensely to the development of our country’s aesthetic football and cricket as well as other indigenous sports with his tireless work. He set up training camps with the aim of creating new players and practiced with them regularly. On July 14, 1975, he married Sultana Khuku, a ‘Blue’ athlete from Dhaka University. As a dedicated, militant and ideological activist of Chhatra League, he played a heroic role in the mass uprising of ’69 and the liberation war of 1971. He was trained in the first war course of independent Bangladesh and was commissioned in the Mukti Bahini and also served as the ADC of General Osmani, the Commander-in-Chief of the Liberation War.
After independence, Sheikh Kamal retired from the army and concentrated on his studies again. He was a member of the central executive parliament of Bangladesh Chhatra League and at the time of his martyrdom he was a member of the central committee of Jatiya Chhatra League, an affiliate of Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League. At the time of his martyrdom on 15 August 1975, he passed the final examination of the MA year of the Department of Social Sciences.
On the occasion of the birthday of Sheikh Kamal, a proud officer commissioned by the Bangladesh Army, various political, socio-cultural and sports organizations including the Awami League have taken detailed programs in compliance with the health protection rules. The Awami League and its allies will lay wreaths at the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal at the Abahani Club premises in Dhanmondi at 8.30 am today and pay homage at his grave at Banani Cemetery at 9.15 am. Later, Quran recitation, Milad and prayer mahfil will be held.
Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader has made a humble request to the leaders, workers, supporters and well-wishers of all levels of the party and allied organizations to observe the 72nd birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal with due dignity.
