Arun Sarkar, Bureau Chief Sylhet: Police have received a DNA report on the rape of a young girl at the much-discussed MC College dormitory in Sylhet. After two long months, the police got the report. However, it was not known how many accused were involved in the incident.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police BM Ashraf Ullah Taher confirmed receiving the DNA report on Sunday. He said that now there was no obstacle to give the chargesheet of this sensational case. He also confirmed that the details of the case will be informed after giving the chargesheet.
Earlier, DNA samples of six accused arrested in two days were collected on October 1 and 3. After collecting samples at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet, they were sent to Dhaka Lab. From there the sample test report first reaches the court. The report was later handed over to the investigating officer.
The 25-year-old girl was gang-raped at the MC College dormitory in Baluchar area of Sylhet on the night of September 25. The girl was raped while her husband was tied up in a dormitory closed due to corona. Then the rapists beat them and snatched their money. On the same night, the victim’s husband filed a case with the city’s Shahparan police station.
After this incident, an intense anti-rape movement started across the country. The government also amended the anti-rape law by keeping the provision of death penalty under the pressure of public opinion.
According to the case file, a young man from Jainpur area of South Surma went to visit Shahparan Mazar in a private car on the afternoon of September 25. On the way back, they stopped in front of the main gate of MC College in Tilagarh in the evening. At that time some young men came and surrounded the young man’s wife. At one stage, the youths took the young man along with his private car to the dormitory of MC College on the wife’s shelf. After that the young man was detained and his wife was raped by 5/6 people in a private car.
The couple was later beaten and their money and gold were snatched away by the rapists. Private cars were also detained. After being released from the dormitory, the victim’s husband called the police at Tilagarh point. Police later recovered the couple’s private car from the dormitory and admitted the victim to the One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) at Osmani Medical College Hospital. However, the accused fled after sensing the presence of the police.
On the same night, the victim’s husband filed a case with the Shahparan police station mentioning the names of 6 people and accusing 3/4 of them. And when the news of such an incident spread in a traditional educational institution of Swash’s year, there was intense anger across the country. Ordinary people took to the streets demanding justice for those responsible and an end to the oppression of women.
A case has been filed against 6 people in this incident at SMP’s Shahparan police station. The victim’s husband filed the case as a plaintiff. The accused in the case are- Tarekul Islam Tarek (28), son of Rafiqul Islam of Umednagar of Sunamganj Sadar Upazila, Md. Of Bagunipara of Habiganj Sadar.
Jahangir Miah’s son Shah Mohammad. Mahbubur Rahman Rony (25), Arjun Laskar (25), son of Kanu Laskar of Atgram in Zakiganj, Rabiul Islam (25) of Barangadipur (Jagdal) village of Dirai upazila and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum (25) of Gachbari village of Kanaighat. Besides, three more unidentified persons were also accused.
Though the accused fled after the case was filed, the police arrested Saifur Rahman, Tarekul Islam Tarek, Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Arjun Laskar, Rabiul Islam and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum and Misbauur Rahman Rajan and Ainuddin from different places of Sylhet division within 3 days of the incident. Local and college sources said that all the arrested persons were involved in BCL politics even though they were not in any post.
After the arrest, the police remanded each of them for 5 days. At the end of the remand, all of them confessed to the rape and testified in the court under section 164.
Meanwhile, on the night of the rape, police raided the room occupied by Saifur Rahman in the dormitory of MC College and recovered firearms. The police filed a case against Saifur under the Arms Act. The chargesheet in that case has not been filed yet. On the other hand, after the judicial investigation into the incident of gang rape, the High Court Justice. A report has been submitted to the bench comprising Mojibur Rahman Mia and Mohi Uddin Shamim.
Meanwhile, after the incident of gang-rape, an investigation committee was formed by the college authorities on October 26. Although the investigation committee submitted the report later, the principal of the college sealed the report of the college committee on the pretext of judicial inquiry.
Moreover, the National University has canceled the scholarships and certificates of four accused involved in the gang-rape of a housewife. They have also been permanently expelled from MC College. The expelled are Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum and Rabiul Hasan.
Earlier, a few days after the incident, an investigation committee from the Ministry of Education came to MC College to investigate the incident. At the end of the investigation, they submitted their report to the Ministry of Education.
