The United States is meeting with the Taliban for the first time since the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.
The US envoy will meet with top Taliban leaders in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday and Sunday, local time, Arab News reported.
The Taliban claimed control of the capital, Kabul, in mid-August. Later, American troops who had been in the country for 20 years were withdrawn.
This is the first time the United States has held talks with the country’s ruling leadership since withdrawing troops from Afghanistan. The meeting could focus on controlling extremist groups in Afghanistan and expelling foreigners.
Doha Taliban spokesman Shaheen Sohail said there would be a meeting. There will be talks on various bilateral issues. The Doha agreement will also be discussed.
