BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has complained that government relief materials are not reaching the flood-hit areas.

He made the allegation to reporters after meeting his family at the home of Dhaka City Corporation’s ‘missing’ councilor Chowdhury Alam in the capital’s Khilgaon on Friday morning.

Fakhrul said, “You have seen that a terrible flood is going on in the country in the northern region including Sylhet and Sunamganj.” I myself went to Sylhet yesterday (Thursday). If you don’t see it with your own eyes, you can’t have any idea about its horror. The government has not taken any measures to alleviate the suffering of the people and to provide relief to them, to provide for their survival, to rehabilitate them. ‘

‘While this so-called unelected Prime Minister flew in a helicopter, he landed on the helipad of the Circuit House. He gave token relief to 10 people there and then he said, everything will be done. Until yesterday (Thursday) night, all the news I got was nothing. ‘

Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘After the army landed, they were systematically trying to reach some relief remote areas. Apart from this, some private NGOs are also working.

Regarding the BNP’s relief program, the secretary general said, “Our party leaders and workers are doing the most work. They are renting boats with their own money to reach the people with relief and they are working at a massive rate. I want to thank the leaders of Sylhet through you. At the same time, I demand immediate declaration of flood-affected areas as disaster areas.

Mirza Fakhrul said, “The government has not taken any action to address the cause or problem of the floods. Rather, measures have been taken to increase it.” There is a big road in Howrah, which goes to Itna in Kishoreganj. We have heard that it is a prize project of our President. This road is 33 kilometers long. The normal flow of water on this road has stopped. ‘

‘The water that comes down from the upper reaches today goes out through your Sylhet-Sunamganj haor and falls into Meghna through Kishoreganj-Netrokona haor. But the normal flow or speed of water has been stopped today. As a result, there is a terrible flood.

It is alleged that Chowdhury Alam, former commissioner of Dhaka City Corporation’s 20th ward (formerly 56th ward) was taken away in a microbus on June 24, 2010 from Farmgate area of the capital. On the day of his disappearance, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited Chowdhury Alam’s house in Khilgaon at 10.30 am and spoke to his wife Hasina Chowdhury and inquired about the family members.

Chowdhury’s two sons Abu Saeed Chowdhury, Abu Sadat Chowdhury, two daughters Mahmuda Akhter, Mahfuza Akhter and Chowdhury Alam’s younger brother Khurshid Alam were present at the time.

Mahanagar Dakshin BNP president Abdus Salam, member secretary Rafiqul Alam Majnu, Mahanagar leader Abdul Hannan, Faruk Ahmed, Nazrul Islam of Swachchasebak Dal and BNP chairperson’s media wing member Shairul Kabir Khan were with the secretary general.
