The government of Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lফfven has collapsed after losing a vote of confidence in parliament.

The vote was held in the country’s parliament on Monday. Out of a total of 349 MPs, 181 voted in favor of the proposal. 51 MPs abstained from voting.

For the first time in the country’s history, a prime minister is leaving power after losing a vote of confidence. News from the BBC

Sweden’s Social Democrat leader Lofven will have a week to resign or announce early elections.

A no-confidence motion against Lofven was tabled in parliament after the Left withdrew support from the coalition government over rent control. This led to the fall of the Social Democrat coalition government formed with the Green Party.

If the Prime Minister decides to resign, the Speaker of Parliament will have to negotiate with various parties to form a new government. Last week, the Left Party demanded a no-confidence vote. They made the call after a dispute with the government over the rent of the newly constructed building.
