Grandmother and granddaughter’s body recovered from boat sinking in Padma, Missing 7

The bodies of grandmother and grandson have been recovered from the boat sinking at Shibganj in Chapainawabganj. Seven people are still missing in the incident.

The incident took place at Panka Ghat area of ​​Panka Union in Shibganj upazila of the district on Wednesday noon.

The deceased were identified as Nilufa Begum, 52, wife of Khairul Islam of 20 Russia village in Panka Union and her grandson Siam, 3.

Tariqul Islam, a member of Ward No. 8 of Panka Union, confirmed the deaths of the two and said locals were conducting rescue operations.

Citing locals, Shibganj Police Station OC Farid Hossain said a boat carrying goods and passengers from Baglauri Ghat area sank in the Padma River at around 10:15 pm while it was on its way to 10 Russia Ghat. At least 9 passengers went missing. The locals rescued the bodies of two of them from the river.

The OC added that the boat had at least forty passengers and goods. Upon receiving the news, a rescue team of Shibganj Fire Service has left for the spot.
