BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has advised the party leaders and workers not to despair. “We have to move forward,” he said. Victory is inevitable if we are on the right path. We will win.

He said this while addressing a discussion meeting organized by Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP on the occasion of 40th death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman at the National Press Club on Tuesday.

Contradicting the statement of Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, Mirza Fakhrul Islam said, who is killing democracy? The Awami League is killing democracy again and again. The Awami League has ended everything by tearing down the 1972 constitution. Who removed the caretaker government that went on strike for 173 days, beat people with logs and oars, danced on their chests? The Awami League has removed. This Awami League has taken away the people’s right to vote.

The BNP secretary general said that the people will elect the government in a democratic way through voting – that right does not exist now. Now the way to a peaceful transfer of power is closed. Do not block this path. The consequences are known to the whole world. The government must be changed through democratic elections and popular vote. Otherwise the result is very bad.

Referring to the movement, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a member of the party’s standing committee, said, “Now everyone is a leader, everyone wants to speak on the stage.” No one wants to be an employee. No one wants to be at the end of the procession. If everyone is a leader, who will be the field worker? BNP has 80 percent leaders and 20 workers. If so, how to succeed in the movement? Democracy will be released on the day when everyone will be workers in BNP, a leader will be in front, Khaleda Zia will be released on that day, Tareq Rahman will be able to return to the country.

The meeting was chaired by Munshi Bazlul Basit Anjur, acting president of the north and conducted by Abdul Alim Nakir, general secretary.

Earlier, after inspecting the fire-damaged area in Mohakhali’s seven-storey slum, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the government was carrying out mega projects worth thousands of crores of rupees. Ten thousand crore taka project is going to be fifty thousand crore. But the government is not taking any effective measures for the displaced people. At this time he demanded to provide permanent accommodation for the slum dwellers.

He said the first priority of the government should be to provide shelter to the slum dwellers. Those who have suffered will have to pay adequate compensation. What caused the fire, why it has to be properly investigated. The government must come up with a plan for what can be done for the long-term slum dwellers.

Responding to a question from reporters, the BNP secretary general said that in the current social system of the country, only the upper class people enjoy all the benefits. No provision has been made for the poor and destitute. Without democratic and accountable system, without people’s government, this situation arises. If there is no government of the people, such fires will continue to happen.

Also present at the occasion were BNP Central Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid, BNP leader Tabitha Awal, Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP senior vice president Munshi Bazlul Basit, Juba Dal president SM Jahangir and others.
